Cambodian Women Dominate the Nation’s Gold Medal Count at 12th ASEAN Para Games

PHNOM PENH: As the 12th ASEAN Para Games near the end, Cambodian women athletes continue to be the pride of the nation, winning all six gold medals the country has garnered so far.

Cambodian track and field star Vet Chanta took home her third gold medal yesterday in the women’s 200-meter race after already placing first in the 400-meter race and the women’s long jump earlier in the week.

Runners Yin Sot and Nguon Ratana also won gold in the 800-meter and 1500-meter respectively. Ratana also garnered a silver for Cambodia in the 400-meter alongside Vet Chanta who won the race.

The Cambodian women’s wheelchair basketball team won the first gold of the Games when Soem Da, San Rotha, Lak Savry, An Sinet and Pheung Phors defeated their Thai opponents in a 3x3 match on June 3, before the inauguration ceremony even took place. The team will compete for the gold against Thailand today for the 5x5 tournament at the Morodok Techo National Stadium.

The male athletes have won 22 medals total so far, gaining eight silver in Judo, swimming and track and field and bringing the total medals for Cambodia to 43. Cambodia has already topped its performance from the previous Para Games in Silo, Indonesia, during which the country took home a total of 28 medals.

With only two days left of the 12th ASEAN Para Games, today is the final opportunity for athletes to win medals in track and field and powerlifting. Tomorrow will see the final events for swimming, football, goalball, table tennis and sitting volleyball. Entry to the events is free and the schedule can be found on cambodia2023.com.
